Mr. Vassilios Peristeras: Promoting semantic interoperability in Europe
Semantic interoperability problems are perceived a major obstacle by the EU Digital Agenda and Member States for the exchange of information and data. The European Commission promotes cross-domain interoperability with the Interoperability Solutions for European Public Administrations (ISA) Programme. Amongst others, the ISA Programme raises awareness on the importance of semantic standards. These standards are perceived as important assets that need to be carefully managed by governments and public agencies. The Programme tries to increase the visibility of already available semantic standards. In addition, it facilitates and promotes agreements on basic information models, creating a “thin”, cross-domain, semantic interoperability layer.
